Liz Smith: Christine O’Donnell–The New Punch Line, the new Sarah Palin, the new Ha! Ha! Ha! to the Left?
“CHRISTINE O’Donnell, like Sarah Palin, knows that attacks by those elites, including conservative grandees, only backfire and enhance her image as a feisty defender of the aggrieved and resentful Joe Plumbers in ‘real America’…the more O’Donnell is vilified, the bigger star she becomes.”
That’s Frank Rich writing in the New York Times on Sunday. Incredibly, Rich is the first so far to grasp the fact that O’Donnell is following step-by-step in the high-heeled footprints of ex-governor Palin; mocking her only empowers her. Now, O’Donnell has even iffier personal issues than Palin – the woman can’t seem to get a real job, hold one, or explain certain financial problems. But what the hell does that matter, with Bill Maher giving her incredible publicity week after week, playing those old appearances she made on Maher’s “Politically Incorrect” back in the day.
You might say, “Oh, but it’s bad publicity – she seems like a nut!” But keep pushing somebody down and they are bound to rise up in another part of the lake, no matter how muddy. It happened with Palin, and it is happening with O’Donnell. I don’t think we need to worry about O’Donnell occupying the White House, but like Palin she is fast becoming a heroine to the Tea Party and ultra- conservatives.
Not only do they agree with her, they find it in very bad form to insult a woman day after day. Unless it’s Nancy Pelosi or Hillary Clinton.
So go right ahead, Bill Maher, Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow. You’ll be sorry, mark my words.
