The dress, which cost £30 to make, went under the hammer for £65,000 – more than seven times its pre-sale estimate of £10,000 – with a 20 per cent buyers’ premium on top (Approx $125,000).

The see-through dress that first attracted Prince William to Kate Middleton sold for £78,000 at auction.

Miss Middleton modelled the knitted lace outfit for a charity fashion show while the pair were students at St Andrews University in 2002.

Bidding for the black and turquoise piece began at £20,000 and soared as people battled to get their hands on a piece of royal history.

The outfit fetched more than two dresses worn by Princess Diana that were sold at the same auction.

The dress was being sold by its designer, Charlotte Todd, who created it as part of a project called The Art of Seduction for her degree course at the University of the West of England.

Two years later in 2002, she was approached by St Andrews to use it in its fashion show.

‘It was just pure luck that Kate, out of all those girls, wore it for a few seconds,’ said the 31-year-old, who lives in Bristol.

‘I don’t even see it as a dress, really. To me it’s just a piece of fabric.’
