The royal sweethearts beamed and laughed as they spoke about the moment Wills popped the question three weeks ago.
“It was very romantic,” giggled Kate.
“There’s a true romantic in there.”
William and Kate yesterday revealed they will wed next year after the Prince proposed on a romantic holiday in Kenya last month.
The Prince said he had been working up the courage to ask Kate for her hand in marriage before they went away.
He said: “I’d been planning it for a while but as any guy out there will know it takes a certain amount of motivation to get yourself going. I was planning it and then it just felt really right out in Africa.
“It was beautiful at the time.
“I had done a little bit of planning to show my romantic side.”
Shockingly, William said he had been carrying his mum’s £28,000 engagement ring with him in his RUCKSACK waiting for the right moment.
He said: “I had been carrying it around with me in my rucksack for about three weeks before that and I literally would not let it go, everywhere I went I was keeping hold of it because I knew this thing, if it disappeared I would be in a lot of trouble and because I’d planned it, it went fine.
“You hear a lot of horror stories about proposing and things going horribly wrong – it went really, really well and I was really pleased she said yes.”
Sitting on a sofa at Clarence House the pair appeared calm and relaxed, but William revealed they were suffering from nerves to tell everybody.”
At an earlier press conference, the couple told of their love — and how Kate will settle into the royal family.
Asked if he got down on one knee, the Prince laughed and said: “That’s going to stay a secret.”
The Prince gave Kate his mum’s engagement ring – a beautiful ring Princess Diana picked out personally, consisting of 14 diamonds surrounding a sapphire.
William said: “It’s my mother’s engagement ring, so of course it’s very special to me. As Kate is very special to me now as well, it’s only right the two were put together.
“It was my way of making sure my mother didn’t miss out on today and the excitement and the fact we’re going to spend the rest of our lives together.”
Kate said she was ready to take on the challenge of joining the royal family.
“It’s quite a daunting prospect but hopefully I’ll take it in my stride, and William’s a great teacher so hopefully he’ll be able to help me along the way,” she said.
“I’m really looking forward to spending my time with William.”
The Prince added: “She’s very good at flattery.”
William said they were “both very, very happy”.
Prince Harry said he was “delighted” his brother had “popped the question”, adding: “It means I get a sister which I have always wanted.”
PRINCE William and Kate Middleton gave their first joint television interview last night and revealed they had been talking about marriage for a while.
Buckingham Palace said the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were “absolutely delighted” for both William and Kate.
Her Majesty even sent her engagement congratulations to the royal sweethearts — on Twitter.
The short message read: “The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh are absolutely delighted at the news of Prince William and Catherine Middleton’s engagement.”
Speaking about why it took him so long to propose, Wills said: “I don’t remember how many years it’s been – forgetful memory – and I also didn’t realise it was a race, otherwise I probably would have been a lot quicker!
“The timing is right now. We’re both very, very happy, and I’m very glad that I have done it.”
The couple met nine years ago and in recent months rumours have been rife about a royal engagement.
Dubbed “Waity Katie” for her patience as she held out for her Prince to get down on one knee, Kate is to finally become a bride, a royal wife and one day Queen.
After the wedding the couple, who met at St Andrews University, will live in north Wales where the Prince is serving with the RAF. They will marry in London in spring or summer next year.
Speaking at his Poundbury model village in Dorset, the Prince of Wales today said he was “thrilled, obviously, thank you. They have been practising long enough”.
he Duchess of Cornwall said news of the engagement was “absolutely wonderful”.
On her way into the Apollo theatre in Victoria, central London, she was presented with flowers by well-wisher Susan Walsh and congratulated on the happy announcement.
Camilla replied: “It’s brilliant, isn’t it? It’s absolutely wonderful.”
The Prime Minister was one of the first to congratulate the pair, who are both 28.
David Cameron hailed the engagement as “a great day for our country”.
He also revealed that the Prince was “thrilled” when he rang him to pass on his congratulations.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Mr Cameron said: “A great day for our country, a great day for the Royal family and obviously a great day for Prince William and for Kate.”
Revealing that he slept on the Mall on the night of the wedding of William’s parents, Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales, the Prime Minister predicted that next year’s Royal wedding would unite Britain.
He said: “I’m sure lots of people will want to celebrate in lots of different ways.”
The couple announced their engagement in a statement from Clarence House.
The statement said: “The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton.
“The wedding will take place in the Spring or Summer of 2011, in London. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course.
“Prince William and Miss Middleton became engaged in October during a private holiday in Kenya.
“Prince William has informed The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince William has also sought the permission of Miss Middleton’s father.
“Following the marriage, the couple will live in north Wales, where Prince William will continue to serve with the Royal Air Force.”
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and his wife Miriam also sent their best wishes.
“I am thrilled to hear the fantastic news of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s engagement,” Mr Clegg said.
“Miriam and I would like to send our very best wishes to the happy couple ahead of their big day.”
Earl Spencer, William’s uncle and Diana’s brother, said in a statement: “It’s wonderful news. Very exciting. My family are all thrilled for them both.”
Kate who comes from a wealthy middle class background, was born a commoner but is now in line to become Queen one day.
As a Queen Consort, she would be crowned and anointed at the coronation ceremony like the Queen Mother was.
She met William in 2001 while they were studying history of art at university.
Kate was credited with persuading the Prince to continue his studies when he considered quitting as he struggled to adjust to university life during his first year.
They moved into a shared house with two other friends in 2002 and reportedly became a couple around Christmas 2003.
The couple briefly split up in April 2007, apparently because of the strain caused by William’s military career, but they were secretly back together within weeks.
Kate’s millionaire parents Michael and Carole, who is a former air hostess, run a mail-order business called Party Pieces which sells toys and party paraphernalia.
She was privately educated at the £15,000-a-year Marlborough College, where she was a keen netball and hockey player, and has two younger siblings, Pippa and James.
If Kate follows royal tradition, her wedding ring is likely to be fashioned from a nugget of Welsh gold.
Since the custom was started by the Queen Mother in 1923, Welsh gold has been used for royal brides ever since.
Former Queen Catherines include three of Henry VIII’s six wives – his first Catherine of Aragon, his fifth Catherine Howard and his sixth Katherine Parr.
There was also Catherine of Valois who married Henry V in the early 15th century, and Catherine of Braganza, who was Charles II’s wife.
